NOLA Part 2

Friday morning in NOLA began with a 45 minute drive to Oak Alley Plantation.

On each side of the house there is a 1/4 mile stretch of oak trees leading to the entrances. The older side consists of 300 year old oaks!!

We ate breakfast at the plantation and had to get the flight of mint juleps. Neither of us were big fans!

The grounds are absolutely stunning.
After touring the slave quarters (I will insert photos once I load pics from my camera), we took the guided tour of the big house.

The original owners, the Roman family, lost the property once Mr. Roman died and his wife ran the plantation into insurmountable debt. The house was in shambles for a long time and almost all of the original furniture was lost. However, all the current furniture is accurate to the 1800's. The lavender room shown above contains actual furniture from the last private owner who owned the home from  the 1920's-1960's. Her and her husband are responsible for restoring the home. All the clocks in the house are set to 6:30, the time of her death, in her memory.

Civil war tent set up outside.

New Orleans Part 1

It's been a longggg time since I've updated and although I have so much to add since the last time I posted, I want to do a few current posts to get back in the swing of bloggin'-things!

It's my spring break and we are in the wonderful New Orleans, LA! Woo hoo!

Off we go!

Day 1: we began our week with a tour of the French quarter...

Right after we parked and began making our way to the quarter, we stumbled on the the Norma Wallace house!! She is the notorious madam my book above is about! I was so excited!!

While we waited for the tour to start we made our first visit to Cafe du Monde for some DELICIOUS beignets!

Cor approved

Cor thought it was just so funny that I got powdered sugar everyyyywhere!

(I will insert more photos from our French quarter tour once I load the pictures from my real camera!)

After the tour we found the coast guard base just a hop, skip, and a jump away from our Airbnb house!

The base is also right next to Lake Ponchatrain!

For dinner we ate at Chef Ron's Gumbo Stop, which ended being one of if not our favorite spot

Yummy!

We also took our first stroll down Bourbon St. and wow. I think it's safe to say Bourbon St. is more than I can handle!!

Thursday morning we started with another trip to Cafe du Monde. I mean the beignets are just too good. I really don't know how I'm going to go on in life without these!! (Kidding.. Kind of...)

Passed by the Praline making. Those, for the record, I will happily go on without! (Not a fan)

We stopped inside St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square

At 10:00 am we toured the Louisiana State Museum, which has two separate floors. The first floor is an exhibit on Hurricane Katrina and the top floor. I don't think I actually took any pictures inside but we really enjoyed the Hurricane Katrina floor. Also, outside the museum was this coastie sign

After that we had a scheduled swamp tour about 30 mins outside of the city! Since we were early we got to stroll around the local seafood market

Cor was dying for the very cheap crawfish and shrimp!

The it was time for our swamp adventure!

Because it had rained earlier in the day, our sweet, very southern tour guide was afraid we wouldn't find any gators. Since seeing a gator topped my NOLA checklist I, too, we very concerned.

I was enjoying the beauty though

Alas, a little guy hungry for marshmallows

Right after this little gent, we found a good size gator!!!

I was hopping out of my seat excited!! A real gator soooo close!!!!!!

I just loved the bayou and I would love to explore it more! It's beautiful and mysterious and I could have stayed out there for hours. That tour was definitely a highlight of the trip!

After the tour we were famished and headed to a spot called Cochon Butcher which unfortunately is big on pork dishes. Not. Happy.

And the food was just meh. My TURKEY sandwich is not pictured, just FYI.

We had a ghost tour scheduled for 7 pm and had some time to kill so we took another stroll down Bourbon Street.

And yes just to confirm, it is too much for me.

The ghost tour began and it wasn't too hokey for me, although Cor wasn't a huge fan. I liked the history and the stories that were based on actual events.

My favorite story of the tour involved the house below. A women named Delphine Lalaurie and her Dr. husband were rich socialites who hosted lavish parties in the 1800's. After a fire in their house, a slabs torture chamber was discovered on their third floor. The house is supposedly haunted and no one has owned the house for more than 2 years since.

It's hard to see in that second picture but the torture chamber room is the blank spot on the top left floor. There is an archway there but no window. An oil tycoon is the current owner and blogs about the creepy things that have happened since he's lived there.

Overall I enjoyed the tour and Cor was a really good sport <3

That sums up our first two action packed days in NOLA!! Part two will be up shortly!!

XO <3
